Effluent Treatment for a Leading Food Manufacturer in Dubai Using MBBR Technology
Field
Details
Client
A leading food manufacturing company
Location
United Arab Emirates
Type
Effluent Treatment Plant
Capacity
110.00 m³/day
Effluent Characteristics
• High fraction of biodegradable organics
• Significant suspended solids
• Presence of emulsified oils
Client Profile
A leading food manufacturing company with a production facility in Dubai.
Challenge
The client was struggling to manage wastewater generated from their production processes, particularly from the CIP (Clean-in-Place) cycles.
Wastewater Characteristics
Preliminary analysis revealed that the effluent contained:
- A high fraction of biodegradable organics
- Significant levels of suspended solids
- Noticeable amounts of emulsified oils
These factors made efficient treatment essential to ensure compliance with discharge standards and enable safe reuse options.
Solution
Tailored Treatment Design
Emvees designed a customized treatment system using Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology, incorporating all key stages of wastewater treatment: preliminary, primary, secondary, and tertiary.
Key Stages of Treatment
- Preliminary Stage: Coarse and fine screens were installed to capture and remove large, suspended solids.
- Primary Stage: A Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit was introduced to remove residual suspended particles and emulsified oils, while also reducing organic load.
- Secondary Stage: The MBBR reactors were engineered to achieve up to 95% removal of biodegradable organics, ensuring efficient biological treatment.
- Tertiary Stage: A two-step filtration process, combining pressure sand filtration and activated carbon filtration, provided final polishing of the treated effluent.
- Skilled Labor: Specialized technicians are required for UF operation and maintenance, adding to overall costs.
Results
- The system consistently delivers effluent that complies with standards for restricted irrigation and landscaping use.
- A large portion of the facility’s landscaping water demand is now fulfilled through treated wastewater, reducing dependence on external water sources.
- Emvees’ operations and maintenance team has successfully managed the plant for over eight years, ensuring stable performance and compliance.
