Client Profile
A leading food manufacturing company with a production facility in Dubai.
Challenge
The client was struggling to manage wastewater generated from their production processes, particularly from the CIP (Clean-in-Place) cycles.
- COD: 450,000 mg/L
- BOD: 25,000 mg/L
The wastewater also contained a significant fraction of non-biodegradable organics, making it resistant to conventional treatment methods.
Wastewater Characteristics
Preliminary analysis revealed that the effluent contained:
- A high fraction of biodegradable organics
- Significant levels of suspended solids
- Noticeable amounts of emulsified oils
These factors made efficient treatment essential to ensure compliance with discharge standards and enable safe reuse options.

Solution Offered by Emvees
Tailored Treatment Design
Emvees designed a customized treatment system using Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology, incorporating all key stages of wastewater treatment: preliminary, primary, secondary, and tertiary.
Key Stages of Treatment
- Preliminary Stage: Coarse and fine screens were installed to capture and remove large, suspended solids.
- Primary Stage: A Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit was introduced to remove residual suspended particles and emulsified oils, while also reducing organic load.
- Secondary Stage: The MBBR reactors were engineered to achieve up to 95% removal of biodegradable organics, ensuring efficient biological treatment.
- Tertiary Stage: A two-step filtration process, combining pressure sand filtration and activated carbon filtration, provided final polishing of the treated effluent.
- Skilled Labor: Specialized technicians are required for UF operation and maintenance, adding to overall costs.
Following multiple lab trials on wastewater samples, it was determined that the effluent contained a high fraction of non-biodegradable organics. Conventional treatment methods were insufficient, so Emvees designed a customized treatment solution that integrated:
- Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP):
Used to break down hard-to-degrade compounds and reduce effluent toxicity, making the wastewater more suitable for biological treatment. - Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR):
Implemented after AOP to ensure efficient biodegradation of the pretreated organics and achieve compliance with trade effluent discharge limits.
Results Achieved
The Emvees solution delivered significant benefits for the client:
✔ Regulatory Compliance
The system consistently delivers effluent that complies with standards for restricted irrigation and landscaping use.
💧 Sustainability Alignment
A large portion of the facility’s landscaping water demand is now fulfilled through treated wastewater, reducing dependence on external water sources.
⚙️ Operational Success
Emvees’ operations and maintenance team has successfully managed the plant for over eight years, ensuring stable performance and compliance.
- Regulatory Compliance: Effluent quality consistently met discharge standards.
- Sustainability Alignment: Hazardous waste disposal was drastically reduced, supporting the client’s global sustainability commitments.
- Operational Success: The plant has been successfully operated and maintained by Emvees for over four years, with stable performance.
- Water Reuse: In the second phase of the project, additional tertiary treatment units were added, enabling reuse of treated water for: o Landscaping o WC flushing o Floor cleaning o Other non-potable applications
- Skilled Labor: Specialized technicians are required for UF operation and maintenance, adding to overall costs.
