MBBR Media
Get in Touch
Biological wastewater treatment depends on maintaining a healthy and active population of microorganisms. In a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor, this is achieved by providing the biomass with a physical surface to attach to and grow on, rather than keeping it in suspension as in conventional activated sludge systems. The media are the foundation of the entire process.
MBBR media are engineered plastic carriers designed to maximise the protected surface area available for biofilm development. Their geometry creates internal surfaces that shield the biofilm from mechanical shear within the reactor while still allowing good contact between the biomass and the wastewater. This supports stable biological performance even when influent conditions vary.
One of the practical advantages of MBBR technology is the relatively compact footprint it enables. Because biomass is concentrated on the media, higher treatment capacity can be achieved in a smaller reactor volume compared to conventional processes. This makes it a useful option for plant upgrades where increasing capacity without significant civil works is a goal.
The media are manufactured from high-density polyethylene, chosen for its durability, chemical resistance, and ability to maintain the correct buoyancy within the reactor over a long service life. Under normal operating conditions, the media do not need to be replaced, making them a long-term investment in the treatment process.
Suitable for new plant designs and retrofits to existing aeration tanks, MBBR media are used in sewage treatment plants, effluent treatment plants, and industrial wastewater systems across the UAE and KSA.
