Activated carbon has long been used for removing contaminants from both water and air, and in odour control applications it remains one of the most reliable and straightforward options available. Carbon filters work through adsorption, a process where odour-causing molecules are captured within the porous structure of the activated carbon media and held there as air passes through.
The process requires no chemicals and no biological activity. Air enters the filter, passes through the carbon bed, and exits with the odour compounds removed. The simplicity of this mechanism is one of the key advantages of carbon filtration, as it results in low mechanical complexity, minimal maintenance requirements, and predictable performance.
Carbon filters are effective against a wide range of odour compounds including hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, volatile organic compounds, and other organic odour constituents. The media can be selected and specified to target the specific compounds present at each site, optimising removal efficiency and media service life.
Media capacity is finite. As the carbon adsorbs contaminants, its capacity gradually reduces until it needs to be replaced. The interval between replacements depends on the concentration of odour compounds in the inlet air and the volume of air being treated. Facilities with high odour loads will require more frequent media changes than those treating lighter odour streams.
Carbon filters are commonly installed at pumping stations, sewage treatment plant inlets, sludge handling areas, and any other enclosed space where odorous air is extracted and needs to be treated before release. They are often used as a polishing stage following biological treatment, or as the primary odour control measure at smaller installations where a full biological system is not warranted.
