Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) in UAE: Advanced Wastewater Treatment by Emvees
The UAE’s environmental regulations require industries and municipalities to treat wastewater to defined standards before discharge or reuse. MBBR technology is one of the most efficient, compact, and cost-effective ways to meet those standards, and Emvees has been delivering MBBR-based treatment systems across the UAE for over 20 years.
Emvees Wastewater Treatment experts designs, supplies, installs, and commissions Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor in UAE for both industrial and municipal applications. Whether you need BOD removal, nitrification, denitrification, or a complete wastewater treatment train, our engineering team will design an MBBR system built around your specific flow rates, effluent characteristics, and regulatory requirements.

What is a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)?
MBBR technology treats wastewater by growing a biological film on submerged plastic carrier media suspended within an aerated tank. The plastic media has a specific gravity lower than 1.0, allowing it to float and move freely throughout the reactor. This movement creates continuous contact between the wastewater and the biological film, driving highly efficient treatment in a compact footprint.
The biofilm that grows on the media surface typically ranges from 50 to 300 microns in thickness. Bubble diffusers placed uniformly at the bottom of the reactor maintain dissolved oxygen levels and remove BOD, while screens on the downstream walls prevent the media from leaving the tank. A Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit is placed downstream of the MBBR tank to separate biomass and solids from the treated water.
An MBBR sewage treatment plant in the UAE removes between 70 and 85 percent of BOD, significantly reducing the load on any downstream treatment process and resulting in a smaller overall carbon footprint compared to conventional systems.
MBBR Technology vs Activated Sludge Process (ASP)
Many industries across the UAE are switching from conventional Activated Sludge Process systems to MBBR technology. The performance and operational advantages are significant.
| Parameter | Activated Sludge Process (ASP) | Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) |
|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) | 12 to 24 hours | 2 to 3 hours |
| Tank Volume Required | Full size | Less than one quarter of ASP |
| Biomass Level | 2,500 to 3,500 mg/l suspended solids | 6,000 mg/l attached growth |
| Available Treatment Mass | Standard | Twice that of ASP |
| Sludge Return | Required | Not required |
| Footprint | Larger | Compact |
| Civil Construction Cost | Higher | Significantly lower |

Applications of MBBR in the UAE
01
MBBR Sewage Treatment Plants
MBBR is widely used in sewage treatment plant applications across the UAE, particularly for hotels, hospitals, residential communities, and labour accommodation where high organic loads and variable flows are common. The technology’s ability to handle load fluctuations without operational adjustments makes it especially well suited for these facilities.
02
Industrial Wastewater Treatment
For industries generating high-strength effluent, including food and beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical, and edible oil sectors, MBBR provides effective BOD removal and biological treatment in a compact footprint that works within existing site constraints.
03
Municipal Wastewater Treatment
MBBR technology is equally effective in municipal wastewater treatment applications, delivering consistent nitrification and denitrification performance across varying seasonal and daily flow conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions: Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor UAE
MBBR uses plastic carrier media suspended in an aerated tank to grow a biological film that breaks down organic pollutants in wastewater. The media moves freely through the tank, ensuring continuous contact between the wastewater and the biomass. This process efficiently removes BOD, and enables nitrification and denitrification in a compact, low-maintenance system.
MBBR requires significantly less tank volume than ASP, achieving the same nitrification in 2 to 3 hours compared to 12 to 24 hours for ASP. MBBR also provides twice the available biomass in a smaller footprint, with no sludge return required, making it a more efficient and cost-effective choice for most applications.
